Animal Live Trap

***NOTE: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, live trap services have been suspended.***


The Department rents out live traps to citizens for the following animals that are considered a nuisance. The Department of Natural Resources considers the following animals a nuisance:
  • Raccoons
  • Skunks**
  • Opossums
  • Woodchuck
  • Rabbit
  • Squirrel
**Although considered a nuisance animal, our Humane Officers will not handle skunk related calls or remove a skunk caught in a live trap. Please contact a pest control company for issues related to skunks.

The Department does not provide live traps large enough to handle the following animals:
  • Coyotes
  • Beavers
  • Foxes
Please contact a pest control company for issues related to any of these larger animals.


Residents experiencing problems with the above animals may rent a live trap from the Department.  A $55 refundable deposit is required in order to use a live trap.

Disposal of Animal

If an animal is trapped in a trap rented from the department*, and a Humane Officer is available (Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) they will humanely destroy and dispose of the animal**.

If a Humane Officer is not working, it is the responsibility of the complainant to dispose of the animal. The DNR
requires any animal trapped must be released or destroyed within 24 hours of capture. If you have any questions related

Animal Relocation

Animals that have been live-captured may not be relocated to DNR controlled lands. When relocating animals to private property, the person must have permission from the owner of the land where the animal is being released [NR 12.10(1)(a)3., s. 169.04(2)(a)2.]
