Library Fees
All fees and fines must be paid at the information desk on the first floor.
Overdue Fees
As of January 1, 2019, the Fitchburg Public Library no longer charges any Overdue Fees.
For more information, please see our Fine Free FAQ and our Circulation Policy.
Lost or Damaged Items
Replacement charges for lost or damaged materials are based on the list price at the time of purchase.
No refunds will be issued for items the library has already replaced, or for items returned more than six months after the date the item was given lost status in the online catalog.
Photocopies & Prints
The library provides access to two photocopiers; one black and white copier on the first floor, and a color copier on the second floor.
The library also provides access to both black and white and color printers throughout the building.
- Black and white copies and prints = $0.10 per side
- Color copies and prints = $0.25 per side
Why did the Fitchburg Public Library eliminate overdue fines?
The Library’s role in the community is to provide equal access to information and services. Overdue fines are a barrier to access, and eliminating them will allow all members of the community to utilize the resources that the Library offers.
How is the Library’s budget affected by this change?
Overdue fines make up less than one percent of the Library’s annual budget. Eliminating overdue fines will not affect Library collections, technology, programs, or services.
How will the Library get patrons to return borrowed items?
Research shows that fine-free libraries do not see a significant increase in overdue materials. Notices are sent by email, voice message, and printed mailing to let our patrons know when materials are overdue. When an item is kept for too long, our system will bill the borrower the replacement price for the item. Patron accounts with more than $20 in fees, of any type, are blocked from checking out additional items until the charges are resolved or the items are returned.
Do I still have to pay a fine that was on my account prior to the Fitchburg Library going fine-free?
Fines assessed by other libraries, as well as fees for any lost and damaged materials will remain on your account. We are currently removing all outstanding overdue fines that were accrued at the Fitchburg Library. This process requires us to manually remove charges from thousands of library accounts. Please bear with us during this process, and if you have any questions about your account balance, visit the circulation desk or call us at 608-729-1761.
Why am I getting new charges on my account?
Items checked out at other SCLS libraries are subject to that library’s fine policies and may still accrue overdue fines. Similarly, while we are no longer charging for overdue items, patrons will continue to be charged for materials that are lost or damaged.
I have always thought of paying my fines as a donation to the library. Can I still donate?
Yes! Donations can be made at the Circulation desk or through the Friends of the Fitchburg Library. Your donation will support Library programs and services.
