The Decision to Cancel

The Fitchburg Recreation Department wants you to be safe and have quality facilities for your sport league, class, or special event. Therefore, when determining whether to cancel an event due to weather conditions we ask ourselves the following questions:

  • Is it safe for our patrons and staff to travel to our facilities for the scheduled activities?
  • Is it safe for patrons to participate in our scheduled activity given the facility's current and anticipated condition?
  • Can the facility accommodate the scheduled activity without sustaining damage?

If the answer to one or more of these questions is no, then we will cancel the activity. If all questions can be answered with yes, the activity will remain on as scheduled.

Why 4 p.m. (Weekdays) & 8 a.m. (Weekends)

The program cancellation web page and cancellation hotline (608-270-4280) are generally not updated before 4 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. on weekends. The reason for this policy is that we give the weather and our staff the benefit of the doubt that our facilities may be readied.

The only exception to this policy is when we are using a school district facility and school is called off due to weather. In this case, our programs are automatically cancelled.
